Postnatal Massage

Gentle, restorative care for your body after birth - led by a midwife.

Postnatal massage at Birth Boutique offers thoughtful, hands-on care from the early days after birth onwards. Unlike many settings where massage is delayed for several weeks, appointments here can be offered much sooner, guided by midwife-led assessment and an understanding of postnatal recovery.

Each treatment is adapted to you and your birth experience - whether you’ve had a vaginal birth, caesarean birth, or a more complex journey. Care is always responsive to how your body feels on the day, with safety, comfort and reassurance at the centre.

This is time to pause, reconnect with your body, and receive care in a space that understands the realities of early postnatal recovery - without pressure, expectations, or the need to explain yourself.

Is postnatal massage safe?

It’s very normal to wonder when it’s safe to receive massage after birth - especially in the early days and weeks.

At Birth Boutique, postnatal massage can be offered from the early days after birth onwards, guided by midwife-led assessment rather than a fixed waiting period. Care is always adapted to you, your recovery, and how your body is feeling on the day.

Postnatal massage may be suitable following a vaginal birth or caesarean birth, including in the early stages of recovery. Positioning, pressure and techniques are chosen carefully, with consideration given to factors such as birth experience, bleeding, healing, feeding, and overall wellbeing.

Some form of massage can almost always be offered. The main consideration is what feels appropriate and supportive for you at that time. Essential oils are used only when suitable and following consultation; if not appropriate, unscented products are used instead.

If you’re unsure whether postnatal massage is right for you, or when would feel best to book, you’re very welcome to get in touch before booking. We’re always happy to talk things through.

All postnatal massage treatments at Birth Boutique are provided by a registered midwife, with experience in supporting bodies in the early weeks and months after birth.

What happens during your appointment

Your appointment begins with a short, gentle consultation. This gives you space to share how your birth and recovery are going, how you’re feeling physically and emotionally, and what would feel most supportive for you on the day. There’s no need to prepare anything in advance - we’ll guide the conversation together.

Positioning is always adapted to suit your body and stage of recovery. This may include lying supported on your back with the head of the couch raised, or side-lying if that feels more comfortable. Pressure and techniques are chosen carefully and adjusted throughout, particularly in the early days and weeks after birth.

Treatment is guided by where your body feels most in need of care. This may include areas such as the back, shoulders, hips, abdomen, legs or feet, depending on your recovery and preferences.

If essential oils are appropriate for you, you’ll be invited to choose from a small selection, which are blended specifically for you following your consultation. If oils aren’t suitable, your massage will still be nurturing and supportive using unscented products.

At the end of your treatment, you’ll be offered refreshing water while we briefly talk through possible healing responses and what to expect afterwards, before you continue with your day.
